Russian Works of Art & Fabergé

A portrait of the Russian Art market today
The Russian Art market continues to be one of the fastest growing and most exciting areas within the international art market. The period of 2007 to 2008 was marked by several record-breaking results in sales of both Russian Pictures and Russian Works of Art. Furthermore, despite challenging economic conditions, 2008 and 2009 have seen strong overall sale results, testifying to the continuing strength and potential of this market.

Russian Art sales feature exceptional decorative works of art, including rare works by Fabergé, icons with silver and enamel oklads, enamels, silver, Imperial and Soviet porcelain, militaria and bronzes. Only the highest quality works, dating from the early 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, are selected for auction.

Leading the Fabergé market
Christie's has had a long and successful history of selling works by Fabergé. In November 2007 an important Fabergé egg from the Rothschild family collection sold for £8.9 million ($18.5 million) in our Russian Works of Art sale in London. This sale established world auction records for a Russian work of art, a work by Fabergé and a timepiece. With the sale of the Imperial Winter Egg, which realized $9,580,000 in April 2002, Christie's also achieved the second highest price for a Russian work of art sold at auction and the second highest auction record for a work by Fabergé. Christie's remains the global market leader in Fabergé sales. In the Russian Art sale in New York in April 2009, Christie's attained an impressive 74% market share of all Fabergé sales.
