Sale Overview
The 19th Century European Art sale at Christie’s South Kensington on 20 January 2016 will showcase the influence of French Belle-Epoque artists. Amongst the highlights is George Stein’s romantic work Westminster Bridge, London (estimate £5,000-£7,000), where a French artist specialising in fin de siècle Paris has captured the Golden light of London at the turn of the century. Fernand-Marie-Eugene Legout-Gerard’s light dappled brush strokes depict sailing boats bobbing from the shore of France in ‘Sunset over sailing boats’ (estimate £6,000-£8,000). The auction also showcases fine examples of Antoinetta Brandeis’ views of Italy in a tour through Florence, Rome and her favoured Venice. (estimates between £4,000-£8,000). Estimates start at £800 and the sale comprises 180 lots which showcase the distinguished skill and artistic prowess of artists across Europe in the 19th century from Northern Europe, Spain, Italy and includes a strong Orientalist collection.
