Join us after hours for a vibrant line-up of talks, performances, exhibitions and workshops that explore the rich history and enduring influence of these artistic traditions.

Entry is free and open to all.

All attendees are required to register online or at the door upon entry to consent to be photographed and filmed during the event. There will be one queue for all guests, and registering does not guarantee priority entry.

A discussion on the impact that art from the Islamic world had on art and artists of the Victorian period with with Qaisra Khan, curator of Islamic art at the Khalili Collections, Rowan Bain, curator at the William Morris Gallery, and Dr Melanie Gibson, editor of the Art History Series at GINGKO, moderated by Barney Bartlett, specialist of Islamic and Indian Art at Christie’s.

Benedict Winter, Christie’s Senior Specialist for Private and Iconic Collections, in conversation with award-winning interior designer Alidad to explore the Islamic influences in his work, highlighting how storytelling, tradition and craftsmanship come together in his design process.

Artists Soraya Syed and Syed Muhammad Khayyam Shah, along with writer and researcher Cosima Stewart, and Matthew Bourne, co-founder of Christopher Farr Carpets, join Louise Broadhurst, Christie’s head of Rugs and Carpets department, in a conversation exploring the ongoing influence of Islamic art on contemporary aesthetics.

Dr. Peyman Heydarian performs a santur solo, finishing with a daf (frame drum) solo, followed by a Hafez poetry recitation.

Alidad

Alidad’s journey as an interior designer started back when he was the youngest departmental director for Islamic works of art and textiles at Sotheby’s. During his time there, Alidad realised that his interest lay more in interior design; creating distinctive spaces using his knowledge and eye for antiques and textiles. He made the decision to establish his own studio and is now world renowned for his opulent yet supremely comfortable interiors. Over the course of his career, his expansive range of projects have allowed him to develop an understanding of all styles and he is comfortable working in any style from Baroque to Art Deco.

Art of Islamic Pattern (Richard & Adam)

Art of Islamic Pattern is an organisation of practicing artists, craftsmen and specialists in Islamic arts and crafts based in East London. AOIP have been hosting workshops from their London Studios since 2008 and organise 10 practical study trips every year to many locations including India, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Egypt. These field trips are focused on ornamental patterns and immersive travel, working with local craftsmen and historians.

They have provide workshops, presentations and public lectures at many of the leading cultural and educational institutions in the UK and beyond, including:- NYU & Spotify, USA, The British Museum, The British Library, The Victoria & Albert Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe, The MIA Museum Doha, Ithra Museum SA, The King’s School of Traditional Arts, The Slade School of Fine Art, Central St Martins, The Royal Society, Asia House, Cambridge University, Pardis University, Isfahan and Zaytuna College, Berkeley, USA.

Cosima Stewart

Cosima Stewart is an Irish writer and researcher specialising in the rugs of Anatolia and the Caucasus. After several years at Christie’s in London she now lives between Italy and Georgia, where she runs reWoven, a non-profit organisation working with Azerbaijani weavers to preserve their rich weaving tradition. Dedicated to collecting the untold stories of weavers and shepherds, she contributes to HALI Magazine and curates specialist publications on the subject.

Diana Darke has spent four decades in the Middle East. Her books include Stealing from the Saracens, My House in Damascus and The Ottomans. A non-resident scholar at Washington DC’s Middle East Institute, she holds degrees in Arabic and in Islamic Art and Architecture.

Dr. Peyman Heydarian

Dr. Peyman Heydarian is an award-winning music scientist and santur virtuoso who has performed around the world since 1984. Peyman teaches the santur and the daf and has developed computational algorithms for music emotion analysis and Dastgah / Maqam recognition using DSP & AI. He is currently researching the possibilities of pushing the boundaries of the Persian and Kurdish music and the santur performance.

Peyman was highly commended at SSMS 2007 contest in Glasgow and won the first prize in Audio Mostly European contest 2017. In 2019 he received The Kurdish progress award “The Most Successful Kurd in the UK art award” in the UK parliament. In 2021, he was featured on BBC Radio 3 for his multi-ethnic programme “The Voice of Santur”.

Freya Saleh is an abstract-figurative artist whose work explores the enigmatic realms of shadow, depth, and form, drawing upon poetic and philosophical literature throughout history. Melanie Gibson

Melanie Gibson received her M.A. and Ph.D. from SOAS, University of London. She is Editor of the Art History Series at GINGKO and lectures regularly on the history of the ceramics of the Islamic world at SOAS, London University and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Her current research is focused on the artist Frederic Leighton as a traveller and collector of Islamic art, and his creation of the ‘Arab Hall’ at Leighton House in London a subject on which she is co-curating an exhibition.

Rowan Bain

Rowan Bain is Principal Curator of the William Morris Gallery, London. In 2024 she co-curated the exhibition William Morris and Art from the Islamic World and edited the accompanying catalogue. Her past exhibitions include Althea McNish: Colour Is Mine (2022) and May Morris: Art & Life (2017). Previously she was Assistant Curator, Middle East Section, at the V&A. Her publications include William Morris’ Flowers and May Morris Arts & Crafts Designer.

Shorsh Saleh

Shorsh Saleh is a painter, carpet designer and weaver.

He studied MA Traditional Arts at The King!s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, London, where he has been teaching carpet weaving since 2015. He has also taught weaving at the Horniman Museum, Migration Museum, Museum of Islamic Art, Doha , British Museum and the V&A Museum.

Soraya Syed

Soraya Syed is a London-born artist and classically trained calligrapher dedicated to bringing the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy into the 21st century through film, dance, VR, and sculpture. Exhibiting across Europe and the Middle East, and more recently in the US and Taiwan, her pioneering work is celebrated internationally. In 2005, Syed became the first Briton awarded the prestigious ijazah from esteemed Turkish masters.

Syed Muhammad Khayyam Sha

Syed Muhammad Khayyam Shah is a Pakistani artist trained in Indo-Persian miniature painting. His work reinterprets traditional forms using natural pigments like lapis lazuli and gold leaf. Khayyam has been exhibiting internationally, including Asia Now Paris, Singapore Art Fair, and TEFAF Maastricht. His practice explores the fragility of existence, memory, and transformation, reflecting on the quiet complexities of power, loss, and impermanence. He is currently Based between Lahore and the UK.

Tim Beddow

A side from editorial work for the design/interior magazines - and related subjects from rugs to fireplaces - Tim Beddow has an affinity with and knowledge of both Africa and the Middle East.

His first foray into Africa was with the writer Quentin Crewe for his book ‘In search of the Sahara’. Subsequent projects include other books ‘East Africa’ and ‘Safari Style’ on the private homes and lodges of Kenya and Tanzania. ‘Damascus: Hiddeb Treasures of the Old City’ (Thames & Hudson) on the decaying palaces of the Old City followed.

Tim has worked closely with decorator Kathryn Ireland on book projects including ‘Classic Country’ and ‘Summer in France’ (2011). Magazine and hotel assignments have taken him from the glamorous south of France to the backstreets of Calcutta. He is always up to a challenge. Tim also writes articles regularly for The World of Interiors, Architectural Digest and House & Garden.

Tim Beddow divides time between his base in London and a farmhouse in South West France.
