Lot Essay

According to Sumowski (op. cit., p. 1278), Reynier van Gherwen was in Rembrandt's studio c. 1640-45. He is recorded in 1659 as a member of the painter's confraternity in The Hague and he probably died shortly before 1 March 1662. Like many of Rembrandt's students, he kept closely to a limited range of subjects and remarkably, for a career that spanned twenty years, produced very few pictures. Sumowski (op. cit., p. 1280) dates this picture to van Gherwen's later period of c. 1655-60.
