Lot Essay

Archduke Charles (1771-1847), third son of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II, younger brother of Archdukes Franz II and Ferdinand III (see lots 114 and 34), famous field-marshal. His victory over the French troops at Aspern made him extremely popular. In 1815, he married Princess Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg who gave him six children. His eldest child was Archduchess Maria Theresia (1816-1867) who was married in 1837 to Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies, called Re bomba.
