ST. ANDREW, historiated initial 'T' cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[Northern France, probably Paris, early 16th century]

109 x 121mm. St. Andrew the Apostle in carmine tunic and green robes, holding cross and book, with river in background and blue-green tree-studded hills in background, a pale pink sky merging into blue, gold and silver highlighting, within an initial 'T' in pale and dark blue with white tracery, the horizontal and vertical bars with scrolled extensions in orange, on a burnished gold background with foliate ornaments in turquoise and orange. (Verso has antiphons with music). Provenance: Burckhardt-Wildt Album (sold Sotheby's 25 April 1983 lot 209).
