MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS, miniature from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF HOURS ON VELLUM
[Northern France, Poitiers?, mid-15th century]

(Miniature: 157 x 109mm; leaf: 192 x 123mm). Herod on his throne in blue robes, with a crimson belt and a black hat, attended by a figure in a carmine robe, looks on as two women in pink and green dresses attempt to save their children from the swords of two soldiers with exotic gold helmets and breastplates. In the centre, a white foliate initial 'D' enclosing a swan on a green ground, with three lines of text; the en bas scene has two women in pink and dove-grey dresses attempting to save their children from two soldiers in an open landscape with a blue mountainous background. Heightened in gold throughout; the whole within an architectural border. Verso with a panel border of flowers and foliage, and coloured and gilt initials (rubbed).
