BARBERIIS, Philippus de (fl.1475-81). Discordantiae sanctorum doctorum Hieronymi et Augustini. - Sibyllarum de Christo vaticinia. - Varia Iudaeorum et gentilium de Christo testimonia. - PROBA FALCONIA. Centones Vergilii. Venice: Bernardinus Benalius, [after 1500].
4° (188 x 141mm). Collation: A2 B-D4 E2 a-c4. 28 leaves. Printed paper correction pasted over identification of the second sybil. 12 large woodcuts of the Sibyls, each with 4-part border, historiated and ornamental woodcut initials. (Occasional very light staning.) 19th-century vellum.
Previously thought to be an incunable, this edition was printed after 1500. The strong woodcuts depicting the twelve Sybils are Venetian copies of those in earlier Roman editions. As pagan figures prophesying Christ, the Sibyls were given great credence in the Middle Ages. Their number could vary, but commonly, as here, they number 12 to match the 12 prophets of the Old Testament. The Sibyls also featured in art, most notably on Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Goff B-121; IGI I, p.164; GW III, col. 402; Sander 775; Essling 2316; BLSTC Italian p.348.
