(Some browning and staining, a4 torn without loss, lacking final ?blank M4). Contemporary calf, tooled in gilt and blind (scuffed, neatly rebacked and cornered). Provenance: unidentified 17th-century hand (noting the book's purchase for 22 french francs); Christoff Ludw. Vöhlker (18th century signature).
FIRST EDITION, and the first use of Stimmer's plates. "Zählt zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Fechtbüchern" (Lipperheide). The work describes most known forms of man-to-man combat, the majority of plates depict sword exercises (with the two-handed broad sword, the rapier and a form of cutlass), but other weapons include the dagger, staves and halberd.
