(3 double-page plates on guards wrinkled along fold, creases in final plate, light dampstain in lower corner sometimes extending within plate mark, tiny marginal worming in final plates.) 18th-century calf, gilt spine (hinges worn).
FIRST EDITION of the "first book by a British architect consisting of his own designs" (Harris). Trained in Italy, Gibbs published A book of architecture in part to affirm his own reputation in England. Among his most noteworthy projects published here are the designs for St. Mary-le-Strand, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the proposed quadrangle for King's College, Cambridge. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of the Book of architecture (Fowler) and Gibbs's work was a source of inspiration for the presidential White House. Fowler 138; Berlin Kat. 2270; Harris 257.
