Maker's mark of J.E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, circa 1890, with French import mark for 1864-1893
Shaped fiddle-pattern, the tops with tied knot borders, the reverse engraved with intials S, comprising:

- Three fluted sauce-ladles
- Four fluted fruit-serving spoons

- A cheese-scoop
- A fish-slice
- A pair of asparagus-tongs
- Two pairs of ice-serving tongs
- A pair of meat-serving tongs
- A cake-slice
- Two butter-knives
- Twelve circular salt-cellars each on three hoof feet
All stamped J.E. Caldwell sterling and the salt-cellars J.E. CALDWELL & CO PURE COIN PHILAD.

THE INITIAL S IS FOR THE WELL-KNOWN AMERICAN GENRE AND LANDSCAPE ARTIST JULIUS L. STEWART (1855-1919). HE STUDIED IN PARIS WITH GéRôME AND R. DE MADRAZO. DURING HIS CAREER HE WON NUMEROUS PRIZES IN PARIS AND ELSEWHERE IN EUROPE AND HIS WORK IS NOW TO BE FOUND IN VARIOUS AMERICAN MUSEUMS INCLUDING THE ART INSTITUTE IN CHICAGO.
