Lot Essay

Gun No. 377 provides a fine example of G.H. Daw's improvement on F.E. Schneider patent No. 1487 of 1861 which was one of the most significant developments in the history of the breech-loading gun. Daw, appreciating the ingenuity of this combination of the centre-fire principle with the automatically bolted breech-loading gun, went on to improve the design, as here, with an underlever/triggerguard catch, a strengthening of the hinge-pin via a transverse bar in the action-bar, and sprung strikers and an extractor stop
