A circa 1870's green painted wooden treasure box, hallmarked "WELLS FARGO & CO." on the front panel with stenciled white paint. The box with iron hardware on the corners, and a hand forged iron latch. The intended prize of highwaymen like Black Bart, treasure boxes were used for storing customers valuables when they were traveling across the wild west by stagecoach. Treasure boxes were stowed beneath the armed guard's feet, who sat "shotgun" beside the stagecoach driver.
