With two-stage sighted barrel stamped with maker's name and address, the serial numbered octagonal breech section stamped 'S. Sutherland, Richmond, VA.', ejector-rod, plain cylinder, frame and grip-strap, spur trigger-guard, walnut grips, and lanyard ring, the barrel and cylinder retaining traces of original finish

Samuel Sutherland is recorded as a gunsmith and firearms importer in Richmond, VA., between 1851 and 1875. Sutherland is known to have "...served the Confederacy in the alteration of flintlocks and repairs of arms". See Robert E. Gardner, Small Arms Makers, New York, 1963, p. 190
