Lot Essay

Another version is recorded in a private collection (see S. Lorenz, ed., Das Haus Württemberg, 1997, p.168, ill.).

The sitter, daughter of Wilhelm Ludwig, Duke of Württemberg and Magdalena Sibylla, Duchess of Hessen-Darmstadt, never married. She died at the age of 31 after a long illness which confined her to the Stuttgart court from her early youth. She is known to have been a lover of the arts.
