Lot Essay

Three portraits of ladies have cloud backgrounds, another shows two women holding hands. One early portrait of a gentleman includes a note in a later hand describing the sitter as Ledsom (Engineer). One is a copy of a painting. Beard's studio at 34 Church Street Liverpool opened in late 1842 or 1843 under the management of James F. Foard. The Wharton mount was used in the early 1840s. The majority of these daguerreotypes were made at the height of Beard's career when he had studios at several London and other addresses between 1842 and 1852.
