Lot Essay

The youngest of the team of legendary photographers working for Picture Post, from 1938 to 1957 the leading picture magazine in Britain, John Chillingworth established a distinctive style. Stefan Lorant, founding editor of Picture Post and its sternest critic, said of Chillingworth's images "Unlike some acclaimed photographers, his pictures always told the truth". His work has also been published regularly in The Times, The Sunday Times, Queen, Harpers Bazaar and many other publications.

These two images were commissioned for a publication by United Steel but not published.
