Lot Essay

Joseph Maiden was born in Bury, Lancashire, the son of a coachman and publican. He appears to have been sent by one of his father's employers to study under Henry Calvert of Manchester and despite his short life made a name for himself as a painter of landscapes and sporting scenes.
