VIELLOT, Louis Jean Pierre (1748-1831) and Paul Louis OUDART (b. 1796). La Galerie des Oiseaux. Paris: Carpentier-Mricourt, 1834.

2 volumes, 4 (255 x 200mm). 323 hand-coloured lithographic plates only (of 325) after P. L. Oudart, 3 folding, 33 plain plates of bills and feet, tissue guards preserved, with half-titles. (Half title and title to vol. I with large area cut away at lower corners though with no loss to text, plate 27 affected by creasemarks, a few plates spotted or browned, some plate numbers shaved, lacking dedication leaf.) Later 19th-century calf-backed boards, marbled endpapers and edges.

Second edition. The first was published in parts, 1820-29. 'Originally planned to give coloured figures of all the birds in the galleries of the Paris Museum.... Six livraisons were issued thus, with 24 plates by Oudart and with anonymous text which is probably also by Oudart since the dedication is signed by him. This original matter forms the variously paged text and the unnumbered plates at the close of vol. II. The enormity of this project caused its abandonment and the substitution of a more modest programme, with the writing of the text assigned to Viellot, and livraisons 7-82 carried the work to completion.' Cf. Zimmer p. 656. Nissen IVB 960. (2)
