BOYDELL, John (1719-1804, publisher and engraver). A Collection of One Hundred Views in England and Wales. London: John Boydell, 1770.

Broadsheet 2 (535 x 360mm). One letterpress leaf with title and plate list in French and English. 100 engraved views, including 5 folding and 4 sheets with two plates each, most by and after John Boydell, others by Smith, Fletcher, Le Comte, Halett, Scotin, Peak and others after Nichols, Thomas Boydell, Brooking, Menageot, and Van der Velde, dated variously 1738-1756. (Blank corner of title replaced, occasional very light spotting.) Contemporary calf-backed marbled paper boards (sides rubbed).

A rare collection of prints of England and Wales published -- and in part engraved -- by John Boydell, 'the man who almost single-handedly created a market for fine engraving in England and made English prints an eagerly collected commodity throughout Europe' (A. Grafton, 'Catalogues of British Print Publishers,' Print Quarterly, 1984, pp.10-11). A first collection was issued in 1755, hence the majority of the plates have publication dates of 1750-1755, although two are dated 1738 and a few are dated 1756-1765.
