Lot Essay

Churchill travelled to the first meeting of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg in August 1949, where he stayed for nine days and received the Freedom of the City. Shortly beforehand, he went to stay with his wife Clementine in a hotel on Lake Garda. He found the weather rather warm and after a week they moved onto Lake Carezza.
