Lot Essay

Roberts served as a gunner at Ypres in the Royal Field Artillery from 1916. He became an official war artist in December 1917 when he was commissioned by the Canadian War Memorials Fund to depict the effects of the first gas attack on the Canadian Field Battery which had occurred in April 1915. The finished commission The First German Gas Attach at Ypres, 1918, is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
