Lot Essay

The sitter was the second daughter of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland and his wife Mary, only surviving daughter and heiress of Sir Anthony Mildmay, of Apethorpe Hall, Northamptonshire. She married Dutton Gerard, 3rd Baron Gerard (d.1640), as his first wife. Their son Charles succeeded as the 4th Baron Gerard on his father's death.
