Lot Essay

Larionov was a graphic artist, stage designer and book illustrator. He took part in important exhibitions such as the Blaue Reiter exhibition in Munich in 1912 and The First German Autumn Salon in Berlin in 1913. He is today considered the founder of Rayism in 1912, the fist abstract movement in Soviet Art and the equivalent of Futurismo in Italy. He was a leading designer for theatrical productions of Diaghilev, on whose insistence he moved to Switzerland with Goncharova in 1915, and thence to Italy. From 1919 Larionov lived permanently in Paris.
