These medals, struck in gold, silver and bronze, were bestowed upon the officers and crew of the R.M.S. Carpathia by the "Titanic" Survivors' Committee headed by the redoubtable Mrs J.J. Brown, the Denver millionairess affectionately known after the disaster as "the unsinkable Molly Brown". Manufactured by Dieges & Clust of New York but probably designed by Tiffany, the medals were presented at a lavish ceremony in New York on 29th May 1912 when Captain Rostron also received a handsome silver loving cup. It is believed that fourteen gold medals were awarded to the officers of the Carpathia and whilst senior crew members were each granted one in silver, the remaining crew received examples in bronze. Exact numbers of specimens in these metals are unrecorded although those in bronze are clearly the most common amongst the crew which totalled 378 men.
