Lot Essay

The same Thathoul as the previous lot, with the same rank and dignities, but this previously unrecorded seal tells us for the first time that Thathoul is one of the illustrious Pakourianoi, one of the principle families of Georgia. It is known that several of the family held high office in the Eastern parts of the Empire, notably in the duchy of Antioch, for example Apasios, the brother of Gregory, the Grand Domesticos under Alexius I. In his typikon of foundation of the monastery of Backovo, Gregory specifies that all kinsman, even those of Armenian descent, are to be made welcome, proof that there was intermarriage between families holding different religious beliefs. In the event, our Thathoul was without doubt of Armenian descent and of the Chalcedonian persuasion.
