Private J. Hopkins was taken prisoner at Helvetia on 29.12.1900, when it was captured by a large Boer force. Some 250 men of the Liverpools and a Naval gun provided the garrison which was spread over a chain of four hills. The Boers attacked in the night and there being a complete absence of proper sentries or watch procedures, the garrison was taken by surprise and captured after a short fight.
