Lot Essay

"His works realize the old dream of finding an artistic language capable of expressing the crossbreeding of Western and Native cultures in Latin America. It is possible to identify elements of both traditions in his painting. This allows us to find parallels between his work and that of the Mexican artist Francisco Toledo, a member of the Zapoteca indigenous nation who has employed oil paintings and engravings to communicate the animistic approach to landscape and innocent love of animals that are characteristic of his culture.
Yet the work of Jacanamijoy has other intentions: it gives evidence of an intimate relation with nature, whose forms are recognizable in details like leaves, vines and foliage that seem at times to come into focus in small areas of his canvasses. His works do no attempt to document specific landscapes.
Instead, revealing a great astonishment before the secrets of the earth and the jungle, they give the impression of condensing visions and experiences whose main protagonist is the exuberant vegetation of South America."
