Lot Essay

Throughout 1797, Constable continued with his experiments in etching and collected a number of subscribers for J.T. Smiths, Remarks on Rural Scenery, which was published in July of that year. In the Autumn he stayed with Smith in London and appeared resigned to working in his father's business, Smith had also been asked to encourage him to do so by his parents, see Reynolds, op.cit., preceding no. 97.1.
