Lot Essay

Between 1984 and 1993 Dittborn produced and circulated 102 Airmail Paintings to points far from each other in the world: Adelaide, Antwerp, Austin, Banff, Brimingham, Boston, Brisbane, Buenos Aires, Cali, Canberra, Caracas, Cleveland, Cologne, Cuenca, Edmonton, Hobart, Kassel, La Havana, Lima, London, Manchester, Melbourne, New York, Paris, Pittsburgh, Rome, Rotterdam, Seville, Sydney, Trujillo, Vancouver, Zurich and Santiago de Chile. On the map of the world, this circulation is like a giant scale writing, these multicolored brushstrokes are paint hanging in the sky in an aeroplane which never finishes arriving.
