Lot Essay

The view depicts Westminster Bridge, completed and opened in 1750. Beyond the bridge, on the left is Lambeth Palace and on the right St. John the Evangelist Smith Square, the turrets of St. Stephen's Chapel, occupied at this date by the House of Commons, Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey. The stone alcoves on Westminster Bridge, each with lamps on top, were used by pedestrians for shelter in showery weather.
