Lot Essay

The view is taken from Millbank Terrace, looking towards Lambeth Palace with its tree-lined walk and Westminster Bridge, built between 1736 and 1750, in the distance. The bargehouses of the Archbishop of Canterbury are seen in the centre of the picture and Lambeth stairs and St. Mary's church are seen on the extreme right.

Several versions of this painting are known to exist and the popularity of the view is attested to by an engraving by John Maurer, which was published by John Bowles in 1745, and from which this picture may derive. A version of this subject is in the Museum of London [C352].
