Lot Essay

The European traders off Fresh Wharf are either loading or unloading - the vessel closest to the viewer must be loading since the presence of tugs suggests it will shortly be getting under way. Off Billingsgate is a fish carrier from Grimsby, no doubt delivering cod. Buildings in the background include New London Bridge, Cannon Street Station, Adelaide House, Fresh Wharf, St Magnus the Martyr, Horace Jones's Billingsgate Market and the corner of the Custom House.

The son of the London painter Alfred Dixon, Charles Edward Dixon is especially well known for his Thames scenes. Dixon exhibited at the Royal Academy and New Watercolour Society and worked for The Graphic and other periodicals.

A record price for the artist at auction was achieved for View of shipping on the Thames below St Pauls at Christie's London, 21 February 1989, lot 16 (14,300).
