Lot Essay

A labourer is shown leaning on the parapet of Sir John Rennie's London Bridge, with New Fresh Wharf, Adelaide House, the steeple of St Magnus the Martyr and the Monument visible in the distance. A similar view by the Camden Town artist Charles Ginner, dated 1913, is in the Museum of London. Adelaide House was replaced in 1921-5 by the present Egyptian-style building containing offices and warehouses, designed by Sir John Burnet and Tait. Rennie's London Bridge, opened in 1831, was replaced by the present bridge in 1967-72.
