Lieutenant-General Sir Edmund Augustus Whitmore, K.C.B., first entered the British Army as an Ensign in August 1841 and was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel shortly after the Crimea War. In the latter conflict he served as an A.D.C. to Sir George Brown and had his horse shot from under him at the Battle of Inkermann. His foreign awards are confirmed in Hart's. Sir Edmund attained the rank of Lieutenant-General in March 1878, prior to his appointment to the Order of the Bath.
