An original design for a coat of arms for Napoleon; in ink and colored pigments (red, green, blue and black), heightened with gold and gilt-tooling, central portion painted on a shaped sheet of parchment, mounted in large oval on paper hand-marbled in red and blue. N.p., n.d. [1795-1800?]. 1 page, 245 x 195mm., backed. A COAT OF ARMS FOR NAPOLEON. An original design, perhaps commemorating the Italian campaigns, finely executed in colors and gold, with an eagle with outspread wings (in gold), talons holding fasces and lightning bolts; a pink ribbon behind the bird's head. Two battle-axes crossing behind to edges of oval. The eagle holds an escutcheon with a crown on gold ground, the compartments contain gilt-stamped or painted emblems including a crowned lion holding a sword (perhaps representing Venice?), crossed ecclesiastical symbols (Rome?), a cross of Lorraine, and a small gilt-crowned eagle. The shield bordered by a blue-and-white ribbon with gilt-stamped eagles, from it depends a crowned "N" and a five-barred cross with a small gilt head. The white ground behind the eagle and shield decorated with small penwork ornaments; at top a star with rays holding a large "N." Framing eagle and escutcheon is an arrangement of green, gilt-edged curtains with gilt tassels, supporting a large gilt crown. Oval red ground with gilt-tooled floral border (probably a bookbinder's tool), the rest of the sheet marbled red and black.
