Lot Essay

When the painting was in the collection of Lela Marshall Hine, Dr. P.J.J. van Thiel supported an attribution of the present painting to van Haarlem. However, subsequent to studying a photograph, he believes it is more likely to be by an able follower (private communication, March 13, 1999). It will be included in his forthcoming monograph on the artist, under rejected attributions, p. 489.
