Lot Essay

According to a label on the reverse, the sitter was the sister of the artist John Hamilton Mortimer, R.A. Lady Victoria Manners notes that the present work is the primary version of this composition, but that the Rev. Peters also executed a slightly larger version of this painting which was sold at Christie's, London, April 15, 1912.
