Lot Essay

Private Percy Stead, of Bradford, was killed in action on 1.7.1916 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The War Diary states of the 16th Battalion, '... the men advanced in magnificent style (Red on Ridge Sector) ... desperate fighting with bomb and bayonet followed ... at one point while holding the Quadrilateral only two Officers remained - these were later wounded'. Casualties of all ranks including their Commanding Officer amounted to 464.
