S.G.M. For the rescue of passengers and crew from the burning emigrant Steamer Volturno by Officers and men of the British Steamer Minneapolis [and other vessels].

For a full account of this disaster, see notes to the preceding lot; S.S. Minneapolis was one of the vessels which arrived on the scene, along with S.S. Devonian, during the late afternoon of 9 October.

Able Seaman Stephens' S.G.M. was one of the batch of 21 awarded to Officers and men of the Minneapolis.
