Lot Essay

Samuel E. Waller studied at the Gloucester School of Art and was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1871-1902. Many of his paintings depict romantic subjects in 18th century costumes. His wife Mary Lemon Fowler Waller also painted and was known for her portraiture of children as well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1872-1916.
