Lot Essay

Paul-Franois Berthoud (born 1870, Paris) was a sculptor, painter and engraver and studied under Pierre Depuis. He was a founder member of the Salon d'Automne, exhibiting between 1907 and 1931. This bust is of Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), the most versatile and outstanding actress of her generation, who played all the great female (and not a few of the male) heroic roles from classical to early 20th Century drama.
