HULL with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds at '6', blue steel hands and fob wind with loop, engraved on the inner back plate PRESENTED BY THE DIRECTORS OF THE WILSONS & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY SHIPPING COMPANY LIMITED, TO CAPTAIN J. HOWGATE. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS GALLANT ATTEMPT TO SAVE THE S.S. "TRURO" FROM A GERMAN SUBMARINE IN THE NORTH SEA, MAY 6TH.1915., the front case engraved with a monogram for 'JH', dial diameter -- 1½in. (4cm.)

Lot Essay

The British steamer Truro, 836 tons, was owned by the Wilson Line of Hull and built in 1898. On 6th May 1915, whilst on passage from Christiania (Norway) to Grimsby carrying timber, she was first captured and then torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-39 in the North Sea.
