Lot Essay

Reid Stowe was a blue-eyed downtown artist that Basquiat ran into while visiting St. Barts in the Carribean in 1984-85. Basquiat's inscription of 'Ried' with a copyright sign 'o' to form 'Riedo' is possibly a play on the Spanish word riendo meaning "he laughs at himself".
