EINSTEIN, Albert. Autograph letter signed ('Papa') to his son Eduard ('Lieber Tetel'), n.p., 5 December 1929, 1½ pages, 4to.

'Reverence for the incomprehensible' and a premature announcement of the completion of the Unified Field Theory. Einstein commiserates with Eduard on his difficulties with his medical studies: 'It was just the same with me...One feels passive as a stuffed goose, but without getting fat'; the only advantage of this intellectual 'stuffing' is that 'the contemplation of the organic awakes reverence for the incomprehensible and wonder towards all things'. Einstein announces his delight at the completion of his Unified Field Theory, observing ironically 'Der sublime Charakter derselben wird durch Interesselosigkeit der Zeitgenossen bestätigt' (Its sublime character is confirmed by the lack of interest among my contemporaries), and concluding 'It is cheaper to get honour than understanding'.
