[BASEDOW, Johann Bernhard (1724-1790)]. Kupfertafeln zum Elementarbuche für die Jugend ihre Eltern und Freunde. [Volume II: Kupfersammlung zu J.B. Basedows Elementarwerke für die Jugend und ihre Freunde]. Volume I Altona and Bremen, volume II Berlin and Dessau and S.L. Crusius in Leipzig: 1770-1774.
2 plate volumes in one, large oblong 8° (203 x 259mm). Woodcut title border. 100 etched plates, maps and plans numbered to 96 with 4 bis plates, the majority after Daniel Chodowiecki, a small number after Volcke, the maps and plans after H.F. Schlegel, map of Germany hand-coloured. (Plates 9, 16, 26 and 80 browned, plate 19 with tear at lower margin, some light marginal soiling.) Contemporary red boards in contemporary red marbled slipcase, both with manuscript spine labels.
FINE COPY of the two plate volumes to Basedow's Des Elementarbuchs für die Jugend und für ihre Lehrer und Freunde, first published in Altona and Bremen in 1770. With title and one-leaf preface to each volume, and 6-leaf plate list to the 53 plates in volume I. In the second volume, the title and preface are in German, French and Italian. Chodowiecki's keenly observant and sometimes whimsical plates encapsulate nearly all aspects of human experience, ranging from natural history to military conflicts, or from scientific experiments to conjuring tricks, with a particular emphasis on trades and occupations, and frequently combine four scenes or more on one plate. Cf. Rümann 56.
