BÖHME, Jacob (1575-1624). The Works of Jacob Behmen. Edited by G. Ward and T. Langcake. London: for M. Richardson [volumes III-IV for G. Robinson], 1764-1781.
4 volumes, 4° (278 x 206mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 25 engraved plates, one double-page and folding, three with folding overlays, the folding plate and one other with contemporary hand-colouring, one engraved illustration, woodcut initials, symbols and tailpieces, errata leaf in volume IV. (Lacking half-titles, some light spotting and browning, light dampstaining, principally affecting vol. I, small unobtrusive paper flaws affecting text on a few leaves, double-page folding plate with section separated and bound in after it, one plate with short, clean tear on image and with small overlay lacking.) Contemporary sprinkled calf (spines restored, retaining old lettering-pieces, covers a little scuffed). Provenance: John Cambridge (early inscription on title to vol. I); George H. Brook (bookplates); occasional ink corrections and marginal annotations in pencil.
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION IN ENGLISH, second issue. ESTC lists three separate issues of this edition: the first published by M. Richardson alone and with the press figure '4' on p. 13 of 'The Way to Christ'; the second, with the 'Appendix to the Book of Election' on pp. [209]-304 and the press figure '1' on p. 13 of 'The Way to Christ'; and the third published by M. Richardson, J. Richardson and G. Robinson with volume II dated '1763'; all are distinguished by differing translations of Der Weg zu Christo. The plates, with their remarkable arrangements of onlays, are after William Law (1686-1761), and offer diagrammatic and symbolic interpretations of Böhme's theological systems. Cf. Caillet 1289. (4)
