4° (214 x 153mm). Engraved title and 100 full-page engraved plates. Plate 43 printed upside-down. (Title just shaved at top, occasional light soiling or ink smudge, marginal paper flaw.) 18th-century sprinkled calf, gilt spine with giraffe's head crest in compartments, red sprinked edges (very slight wear at spine). Provenance: unidentified crest on spine.
FIRST EDITION, second issue. The designs for the engravings have been assigned to Titian. They were later adapted for woodcuts in a 1570 edition of fables by G.M. Verdizotti, and for editions of Faerno printed by Plantin in 1567 and 1585. With the corrections in manuscript on pp. 13, 94 and 96 described by Mortimer.
