[LANGLAND, William (c.1330-c.1386)]. The Vision of Pierce Plowman, newlye imprynted after the authors olde copy ... whereunto is also annexed the Crede of Pierce Plowman, neuer imprinted with the booke before. London: Owen Rogers, February 1561.

2 works in one volume, 4° (182 x 131mm). Black letter. Title with woodcut tailpiece, 4- and 3-line woodcut floreated initials. (Title restored at lower blank margin and with small stain, paper fault affecting biblical reference on D1v, occasional light stains and soil marks.) Early 20th-century brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf, covers with triple gilt fillets, the upper cover with title, date and small ornament tooled in gilt, spine with raised bands directly lettered in one compartment and dated at foot, the remaining compartments gilt-tooled, gilt turn-ins, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: some old underlining and occasional annotations.

Fourth edition of The Vision of Pierce Plowman, with the second edition of Pierce the Ploughmans Crede. Except as linked in this title, the two works are unrelated. The Crede is by far the rarer piece, there being only five recorded copies of the first edition, published by R. Wolfe in 1553. As Jackson and Hayward note, most copies of this fourth edition of the Vision lack the second part, and the former knew of only 'about a half-dozen copies' which were complete with the Crede, its rarity being 'probably due to contemporary proscription because of its Wycliffite doctrine.' Hayward 12; Pforzheimer 799 (without the Crede); STC 19908.
