Lot Essay

This composition must have enjoyed considerable popularity as it is found in at least three other versions (Anon. Sale, Finarte, Milan, 27 April 1978, lot 78; with Glücksspiel; and Anon. Sale, Christie's, London, 26 October 1990, lot 144). J.P. Cuzin, op. cit., believes the present painting to be the highest quality of the versions known to him.
